Conference Space

Conference Rooms are to be provided for school groups visiting the Nations capital to be briefed.

Also i imagine that heads of state and the prime minister will have meetings in these rooms so that people walking by on their everyday activities will see openly through the glazing conversations happening live, in real time.

Gallery- Political History

In a further attempt to open up the parliamentary functions in australia i propose a Politcal History Gallery on the eastern lower wing. This will pull items out of the depths of archives and allow the public to easily view the items.

surprise spaces

im really enjoying the space in the image below. Its a defaulted space between the soap box arena and the glazing system. I love the tunnel effect, but its also intimate and warm in such a vast exspansive design.

On each wing of the building i have designed a soap box for large captured audiences.

The soap box uses materials of wood and the green grass of the common to speak a language of activists.

Tied Down

The building sits on the water but in order to control the movement of the building with the change in water levels of the lake, i propose to fix it to the lakes bed with the use of post construction. Rather then have it floating and moving with the water and creating an un stable floor for people. Further reserch into water levels would help understand the movement of water and how high it will reach into the building. I do however want the exterior of the building to experience spashing of water at different times. Its beautiful and poetic to flow the water in and out.

The GREEN

The key element of the design is providing a common green for people to use to activate their opinions and thoughts. It is giving something back to the people. Ive tested rendering grass in Vray for Sketchup so achieve maximum realism.

Uninterrupted Views

Cross views are created throughout the design to maximize transparency of the buildings functions and the expansiveness environment.

Interaction with Pedestrian Edge

The existing context is respected with the proposed design. the two buildings speak fluently together. And work together not against. Exiting restaurant and gallery spaces are connected to the new design through a continuation of a cafe area on the west wing and a political history gallery on the east wing.

Building FORM

The form is reduced to a simple extension of the existing land cut and pushed up. It provides a gently gradient for the public to walk up and interact. The building does not interfere with existing views.
The form of the building is a respectful language responding to the existing commonwealth design.

Parliamentary AXIS

Distribution of the people and parliamentary functions are drawn along the EXISTING parliamentary axis, which strengthens the connection between public and parliament.

Practice Render

this semester i want to push myself and learn vray for sketchup rendering software. so far its interesting - but i dont think ill have the effect im affter for this assignment so will prob go back to photoshopping method.

People DISTRIBUTION

people are restricted from walking onto the green of parliament house due to security reasons. Parliament is becoming more and more of a bunker - hiding from the public and loosing transparency.

I propose to distribute the people and the image of parliament down to the waters edge illustrating the "aussie backyard"

After reflecting on existing buildings in the commonwealth area ive decided to do the form sketched below.

its like a finger reaching out to the public from the land. i like how it is low and will respect the existing language. Panoramic views will become optimal in this form. HAPPY!
